A Meaningful Life

I initially wrote something drifty and pretentious on this subject and I would like to strike it all and simply say - sometimes it is hard to take a leap into the unknown but the rewards are worth it. I made a change from a large, mature company to a young, developing one. They say it takes 6 months to acclimate to a new job - I laugh in the face of whoever came up with that one. The part of me that loves manic, insane challenges is doing a happy dance.

March Holidays

St. Patrick's Day and Easter are very close together this year and Monkey has been asking to decorate. So today we whipped out a few craft projects around shamrocks and pots of gold (anyone ever spray paint small rocks the color gold in snow before?) Desperate times call for desperate measures...

After getting a big box from storage, we now have a few spaces, including the family room, decorated to his satisfaction. Yet I want to keep it simple this year, especially in the living room. Here is a pic of what my mantle has on it right now. Only extra is a candle gifted by a friend over Christmas because I love the scent. Green for St. Paddie's Day and bunnies for Easter. Done and done!

Zombies...or how not to survive cold season

After a lovely holiday season, including a trip to the Midwest to visit family, we seem to be falling apart a bit.  This seems to be common this time of year. We run ourselves down with getting a million things done and then the moment we slow down, our immune systems stutter into epic failure.

In an extremely unusual move, my husband got sick first. Then I had cold/ flu symptoms but held the beast at bay with lots of D3, zinc and Emergency C. Then Monkey came down with strep and as of today I have transitioned into goodness knows what. I made homemade Chicken soup last week and stocked up on fresh soup at Mrs. Green's on Friday evening. Thankfully, as cooking was not an area of interest as I dragged myself through caring for my zombie comrades this weekend. On my gratitude list today: TV, Wii, microwaves, amoxicillin, Kleenex, NyQuil, Yogi cold season tea and soft pillows.

Gratitude

Reflecting on all the things I am grateful for tonight.
Top of the list is my healthy family.
The list is really long.
It includes love.
Sweet kisses and jokes about burps and zombie cows.
It includes perfect lattes and pumpkin muffins.
It includes blue skies and fluffy clouds over a soccer field.
A sweaty, happy, triumphant boy who loves school.
A man who makes me laugh and reminds me of everything right and good.
Holding hands three across.
It includes the first autumn breeze wafting through our shutters.
There is so much to be grateful for and my heart is full.

When to Divorce Your Work Spouse

Divorce is never easy. When it is someone you work with, it can be downright traumatic. Occasionally there are even "custody" arrangements of direct reports or a polarization of colleagues to work through. A work spouse can be a man or a woman, same or differing gender. It is the person you work closely with and typically someone similar enough in personality to create chemistry (the unromantic variety) yet different in ways that allow you to complete each other. For example, one may be great with numbers while the other is great with presentations. Perhaps one is more big picture while the other craves a life of details. In short, this relationship is a partnership of sorts.

A work spouse is a blessing and a curse. There is true value in actually enjoying the time spent with work colleagues - often this time is much greater than we spend with our own spouses and family. There is a camaraderie in sharing work stories and lunches with someone who you can also share your personal life with. Someone who remembers your birthday, anniversary, your birth stories and how you like your coffee. Who knows your mood by the way you say "Good Morning" - or not. Who you can borrow a lint brush from or check for salad between teeth before a meeting. Someone that picks up the slack on bad days and who challenges you to do your best every day.

I've had two such "marriages" in my career, and what I know is that they tend to run their course, eventually evolving into friendships from afar. Ideally this will be caused by one person's promotion or transfer - or perhaps even a new job that effectively severs that every day connection. Less ideal is when the relationship begins to sour - leading to the type of resentful bitterness seen in the movie War of the Roses. Just as in a real marriage, this can begin with one person changing course and leaving the other person struggling with the change.

Emotional maturity and professionalism is the antidote to this type of negative energy. But what to do when a work marriage begins to truly sour? Although I have never had to deal with this, I know plenty of people who have. What I have observed is that it is usually best to simply sever all personal aspects of the relationship. Maintain a friendly manner yet keep all conversation topics to work related matters.

Unfortunately, such a transition can be awkward in the short term. Consistency is key and time will eventually lead to new connections and habits. Although the rewards of a healthy work relationship can be tremendous, severing ties with a once close partnership is uniquely challenging. Any conflicts play out in the place that pays your bills and puts food on your table. The good news is that, unlike a real marriage, your house, child custody and alimony is never on that table. Keeping a work spouse divorce in perspective is essential to successfully navigating the dissolution.

Beach Weather

So grateful for some recent R&R on the beach. Grateful for clear water, almost no pesky sea gulls and no crowds. Grateful for fun family time and the amazing dolphins we were lucky enough to spend a little time observing. Grateful for sing-a-longs, frozen cherries and lots of all natural vitamin D.

Simple Pleasures

Ever notice that it is the simplest things that bring the most pleasure? I have been over the moon with the bountiful rose blooms we'd been so fortunate to have this month. I have them in charming little vases in nearly every room and have even been taking them into the office. They smell heavenly. Not sure why I've only taken photos of the orange blooms - the red and whites are just as delightful. Orange is just such a summer color, no?

I also LOVE the rain. I know some people feel blue with wet weather but I just feel energised. This past weekend we even played in the rain a bit before coming into hot showers and ice cold watermelon. See what I mean about simple pleasures? Even the pansies looked happy with the extra rain.

Meditation with Children

Monkey and I have been learning to meditate together. It is something I've been doing off and on for several years yet not consistently for the twenty minutes twice a day practice I know would be optimal. For the past couple of weeks we've added it to our bedtime routine and he gets upset if I suggest we skip it - so we just stay up later to make sure it gets included. We snuggle close in his big comfy chair and use the Ipad to watch YouTube tutorials or we listen to music or meditate silently. Our favorite song is the Gayatri Mantra by Deva Premal and we often sing along. Such a beautiful way to end a long, busy day. Here is one of our favorite videos by yuttadhammos. His voice is calming and sincere and this video a perfect introduction to meditation for children.

Book Club!

One thing I am grateful for this month is my new book club. I now have three intelligent and insightful friends to share my love of books with. We are embarking on our third meeting and it is a lot of fun to meet over a glass of wine (or a venti latte) to share our literary journeys - even if we do talk mostly about our children!

I am enjoying their saucy suggestions for book club names as well as a refreshing new way to feel like an adult who is not at work - make sense? Like there is more to my soul outside my home and office. Wow. That's deep. And we are not even reading anything by Tolstoy or Joyce. My husband teases me that I am turning into a wild woman. One day a book club, what's next? Skydiving? Never know...

Hibernation

This strange time of year between the holidays and Spring has captured me completely. While insanely busy at work, my weekends and nights have been divided between family and...more work. It seems that I am surrounded by women who feel just like me. And women are magic - somehow able to recharge our batteries in the stillness between moments. In the quiet of giving backrubs at bedtime, in the routine of folding laundry, in the shared glass of Belgian lager with one's spouse as our young splash nearby in the bath. We find it in the hour before sunrise and in between the craziness.

Of course a month in Bora Bora would really help out - until then I'll slip in a personal day for yoga, coffee and silence. Who said finding one's bliss was easy?

Mummy or Mommy?

Today I feel more of a mummy than mommy. Ever have those days? When you are fighting off a cold and going through the motions of daily life like a zombie while what you really want to do is succumb to exhaustion? These are times when I throw away the checklists and listen in to what I really need.

Today it was about skipping errands that are not important. Ordering in dinner and playing checkers by firelight. Losing those games with a smile at my opponent's glee. Reading and being read to without feeling guilty about the 101 things on that checklist. I'll worry about preparing the garden for winter tomorrow. Tonight I am content with being a mummy. A mummy with a hot cup of Theraflu. Mmmmm.

The Small Things

As busy as life can get, I do love the small things. A good book that keeps you up all night. A song that lifts you out of your worries. A really good conversation with a soulful friend. The polished swing of a new blow out at the hair salon, an amazing cup of coffee, laughing with loved ones. A cup of tea from a pretty teapot at the end of a long day.

My husband handing me a glass of wine as he smiles at me with my favorite smile. Sitting down to a great meal I did not have to cook. Feeling my son kiss my arm as he passes by without saying a word. One realizes that the small things outweigh the big things by a ton.

We love the ocean so much. The sounds, scent and power is magic. Today I've been drawn to YouTube videos of how the shores looked today in anticipation of Irene. Here is an interesting one - and I am going to research what that foam is...

Early Morning Workout

I am finally forcing myself to find the time to exercise. For my schedule that means heading to the gym at 5:15 in the morning. Since I am not a morning person (*understatement alert!) this commitment has meant an entire shift in my day. I have to go to sleep earlier in order to avoid hitting the snooze button one too many times. I have found that I actually enjoy getting up and out so early. It is quiet and I get to see sights I normally miss. Like early morning light shining upon dewy flowers that I had to stop and inspect below.
